Rachel stands on top of the hill where Bentley's pit used to be. It is now a nature park. In its centre stands a metal sculpture called Monument by Mike Bunn, a miners son, sculptor and lecturer at the new Doncaster university. He was one of rachel's tutor when she studied fine art. The sculpture has a strong symbolic significance which resonate with the local residents.
Bentley Colliery was closed in 1993. The derelict site became part of English Partnerships' National Coalfield Program in 1998.
